Many remarkable opportunities for education exist in South Carolina, whether public or private. School
children may be educated in public, private, or home schools. The state contains several options for
higher education.
South Carolina prides itself on its many public higher education institutions. The University of South Carolina features the flagship campus in Columbia, and has
senior campuses at USC Aiken, USC Beaufort, and USC Upstate
in Spartanburg. The Columbia campus alone offers over 350 degree programs in its 14 degree-granting
colleges and schools. Total enrollment across all USC campuses is over 40,000 students. Clemson University in Clemson is a major research university enrolling
approximately 17,000 students and providing 70 undergraduate and 100 graduate degree programs among
its five colleges. Coastal Carolina University
in Conway enrolls over 8,000 students and offers baccalaureate degrees in 39 major fields of study.
South Carolina State University in Orangeburg is a
historically African-American, land-grant institution founded in 1896 and enrolls nearly 5,000 students.
Winthrop University in Rock Hill is a
comprehensive learning university centered in academic excellence, cultural diversity and public
service; 38 undergraduate and 25 graduate degrees in over 100 areas of study are available to its
5,000 students. Francis Marion University (FMU)
provides a strong liberal arts-based undergraduate education in addition to graduate programs in
education, business, and psychology, and enrolls approximately 4,000 students. Lander University in Greenwood enrolls approximately 3,000 students in its
comprehensive, four-year liberal arts and sciences programs, and offers over 80 areas of undergraduate
study, in addition to professional programs in business, education, and nursing. The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston boasts a medical center and six
colleges for education of health professionals, biomedical scientists, and other health-related
personnel; nearly 2,500 students are enrolled. The College
of Charleston, founded in 1770 and charted in 1785, is the oldest higher education institution in
South Carolina and thirteenth oldest in the U.S.; over 2,000 students take advantage of its 17 graduate
degree programs and five certificate programs. The Citadel
in Charleston, founded in 1842, is a state-supported comprehensive, coeducational military college
offering five bachelor’s degrees in 17 areas, six master’s degrees in 17 areas, and specialist degrees
in two areas.
South Carolina boasts many fine private institutions for higher education. The state’s largest and
oldest private institution is Furman University in
Greenville; founded in 1826, Furman offers majors and programs in 42 subjects. Other notable private
institutions include Allen University in
Columbia, Anderson University in Anderson,
Benedict College in Columbia, Charleston Southern University in Charleston, Claflin University in Orangeburg, Columbia College in Columbia, Erskine
College in Due West, Limestone College in
Gaffney, Morris College in Sumter,
Newberry College in Newberry, and North Greenville College in Tigerville, among others.
Several two-year and community colleges can be found throughout the Palmetto State. Four two-year
regional campuses in the University of South Carolina system are USC Lancaster in Lancaster, USC
Salkehatchie in Allendale, USC Sumter in
Sumter, and USC Union in Union. Additional
